As you can possibly tell from my reviews of previous years, FORWARDS is my favourite music festival, so it was with great excitement I received the first wave lineup announcement this morning.

True, Glastonbury is bigger and Bearded Theory has a more “Indie” lineup, but for sheer vibe and “all killer – no filler” lineup, in a beautiful location in the cool city that is Bristol, you really can’t beat FORWARDS.

We live in strange times when not only do amazing underground artists like Skating Polly fly under a lot of people’s radar but without the dominance of the Top 40 and things like Top of the Pops even huge artists can too.

So when I saw that Loyle Carner was headlining I thought “well I know the name…”.

A quick google revealed why he’s headlining – millions of monthly listeners on Spotify, he’s headlined the West Holts stage at Glastonbury etc etc.

He got into my good books right away when I saw that his most popular song is inspired by my favourite chef Yotam Ottelenghi, and he even references one of my favourite bands Roots Manuva.  He’s headlining my favourite festival, he was just a Skating Polly reference away from me becoming a fan before I’d even heard his music 🙂

First listen to his album “Not Waving, But Drowning” and I’m already looking fwd to his set.

Acts that I’m more familiar with that caught my eye immediately are LCD Soundsystem

Baxter Dury

Yard Act

and Jessie Ware

But I’m sure more will jump out as I listen through the lineup, and festivals aren’t just about seeing the amazing bands you know, it’s about discovering new amazing bands and stepping out of your comfort zone – that’s when the festival experience is at it’s best.

FORWARDS drops its first wave music lineup and announces British rapper, Loyle Carner, as the 2024 Saturday headliner, alongside Four Tet. Dance-punk legends, LCD Soundsystem, will be headlining on Sunday alongside Jessie Ware for Bristol’s biggest international music festival.

The two-day festival, which closes the British summer on 31 August – 1 September, will also see performances from: Four Tet, Jessie Ware, Maribou State, Floating Points, Romy, Greentea Peng, Yussef Dayes, Yard Act, Baxter Dury, CMAT, Nubya Garcia, Hak Baker, MCRY, Jersey, Crazy P, Holysseus Fly and Da Funchaman & The Fire Blaze Band.

FORWARDS is celebrated as one of the UK’s most progressive new festivals, by placing a genre-spanning international music programming side by side with social initiatives, timely debate, local food and beverage, and a future-thinking kids area.

LOYLE CARNER will kick off Saturday with his biggest Bristol performance to date and only show for the city in 2024. Following his powerful performance on Glastonbury’s West Holts stage in 2023, and fresh from his major headline show at London’s All Points East in August 2024, audiences can expect the London-born hip hop artist’s raw and personal on-stage persona.  Carner embodies FORWARDS festival’s socially engaged ethos, with the artist’s previous mantra “Take these words and go forwards” being a manifesto for the year.

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM will close the Bristol festival on Sunday night with their first Bristol performance in 14 years, as part of the band’s 2024 global tour. Spearheaded by the legendary James Murphy, the New York band is a pioneering force in the electronic music landscape with their genre-blending sound, seamlessly fusing dance beats and punk influences.

The full lineups for each of the festival’s days are still to be announced, with tickets due to go on presale at 10:00am, Tuesday 5 March, and on general sale from 10:00am on Wednesday 6 March 2024.

See you there?
